There's a particular kind of frustration that comes with getting an air conditioning repair quote that's almost as much as a brand-new system. You're standing there, it's 89 degrees inside your house, and some technician is handing you a number that makes you wonder if you're being played. Maybe you're not. Maybe the system really is done. But how are you supposed to really know? That's the question this page answers. Air conditioner replacement is a significant decision, and the homeowners who handle it well aren't the ones who acted fast. They're the ones who took 10 minutes to understand what they were actually dealing with before they committed to anything.

How to Know When It's Time to Replace Instead of Repair

Most people who end up needing an HVAC replacement spent at least one extra summer patching a system that was already on its last legs. Each repair felt like the reasonable choice at the time. Looking back, it rarely was.

The 50% rule exists for a reason. If fixing your current HVAC system costs more than half of what a new AC system would run, you're not saving money on the repair. You're financing a slow goodbye. Factor in Georgia's climate, where systems work harder and longer than almost anywhere else in the country, and a 10-year-old unit that keeps needing attention is usually telling you something worth listening to.

R-22 refrigerant is its own conversation. If your system still runs on R-22, also called Freon, it was built before 2010. The EPA phased it out in 2020, and what's left in circulation is expensive and getting scarcer every year. Charging an R-22 system isn't a maintenance item anymore. It's a financial decision that rarely pencils out when you run the numbers against a new AC unit.

Still weighing your options? That's a reasonable place to be. Reach out to the heat and air pros at My Aire Heating and Cooling through our contact form and we'll help you figure out whether your situation calls for an AC repair or a full replacement service, without any agenda either way.

Central Air vs. Ductless: Which Air Conditioner Replacement Option Fits Your Home Best?

The assumption most homeowners make is that AC replacement service means swapping out one central air system for another. Sometimes that's exactly right. But not always.

Central air conditioning replacement is the right call when your ductwork is in good shape. If your ducts are sealed, clean, and sized correctly for your home, you've already got the infrastructure. A new central air system drops into that framework and handles whole-home cooling the way you're used to. Clean, consistent, and familiar.

Ductless mini-splits solve problems that central air can't. That back bedroom that's always 12 degrees hotter than the rest of the house. The sunroom addition that was never tied into the main system. The finished basement that sweats all summer. A ductless system handles those situations without tearing into walls to run new duct. They're also remarkably energy efficient because you're conditioning the space you're actually in, not the whole house.

We install both. And we'll tell you which one actually makes the most sense for your home after we've looked at it, not before. Not sure which direction fits your situation? Contact us at (770) 818-6096 and let's figure it out together before you commit to anything.

What Size AC Unit Do You Need for Your Home in Georgia?

Here's something a lot of HVAC contractors won't tell you: buying a system that's too big is almost as bad as buying one that's too small. In some ways, it's even worse, because you'd never know it until you're living with the consequences.

An oversized AC unit cools your home fast. Sounds good until you realize it's shutting off before it ever pulls the humidity out of the air. You end up cold and clammy, with a thermostat that reads 72 and a house that still feels like a gym locker room in July. The system short-cycles, meaning it starts and stops constantly, which wears out the compressor and other components far ahead of schedule.

An undersized system has the opposite problem. It runs without stopping, can't keep up on the worst days, and drives your energy costs up in the process.

Proper sizing comes from a Manual J load calculation. This accounts for your square footage, ceiling height, insulation, window placement, sun exposure, and several other factors specific to your home. It takes time to do correctly, which is exactly why some contractors skip it. We don't. If someone is quoting you a new air conditioner without doing this calculation first, that's worth questioning.

Getting the sizing right from the start is one of the most consequential things we do on any replacement job. Give us a call at (770) 818-6096, and we'll make sure your new system is sized for your actual home, not just a rough square footage estimate.

Does Air Conditioning Replacement Qualify for Georgia Power Rebates?

Most homeowners never ask this question, which means most homeowners leave money on the table when they replace their system.

Georgia Power's Home Energy Improvement Program offers rebates on select HVAC upgrades. The biggest HVAC-specific rebate is for converting to an air-source heat pump system, up to $1,000, and installation has to be completed by a Georgia Power-approved contractor. My Aire heating and Cooling is on that approved list. A straight central-AC-to-AC replacement doesn't carry the same rebate, so it's worth asking us during your assessment exactly which incentives your specific project qualifies for rather than assuming a number in advance.

One thing worth knowing: the federal Section 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit expired on December 31, 2025. That particular tax credit is no longer available for 2026 installations, so if you've seen it mentioned elsewhere, it's outdated information. The Georgia Power rebate is the relevant incentive right now, and it's a real one.

Check current rebate availability by zip code: energystar.gov/rebate-finder

Also, be sure to check the Georgia Power Home Energy Improvement Program.

Before you sign anything with anyone, find out what rebates your specific system qualifies for. Dial (770) 818-6096 and we'll walk you through exactly what's available and how to make sure it gets applied to your specific job.

Why Georgia Homeowners Choose My Aire for AC System Replacement

We'll let a recent customer go first on this one.

"Love my new unit. Thank you so much. The workers were very professional and kind. Took the time to set up the app on my phone, cleaned up behind themselves. Communicated well and answered all my questions." - Andrea M., Google Review

That review says more about how we operate than any credential we could ever list. Showed up on time, did the full job, cleaned up, explained the new thermostat app before leaving, and answered every question along the way. That's not exceptional service. That's just what an air conditioning installation job should look like, and it's the standard we hold every technician to.

For what it's worth on the credentials side: every heating and air conditioning service technician on our team is NATE-certified, we're a Georgia Power-approved contractor, we've held a BBB A+ rating for years, and we've been serving Georgia homeowners throughout Decatur, Atlanta, Tucker, Brookhaven, DeKalb County, McDonough, and Henry County for over 14 years. But the thing people actually remember after working with us is that we told them the truth. If AC repair makes more sense than replacement for your situation, that's exactly what we'll say. If you genuinely need a new system, we'll walk you through the options honestly, including the ones that cost less.

If the upfront cost is a concern, ask about our flexible financing options. A new AC unit is a significant expense, and we work with homeowners who need some flexibility on how that gets handled. And once your new system is in, we'd love to talk to you about an air conditioner maintenance service plan to protect what you just invested in.

For more detail on what to expect before and after a replacement, visit our AC installation guide and our air conditioning repair service page if you're still deciding between the two.

If you want to work with a company that operates this way, we're easy to reach. Send us a message through the contact form or dial (770) 818-6096 and we'll get your free in-home assessment scheduled.
